Burras unveil new facilities
Minyip Murtoa Football Netball Club unveiled their new netball court and facilities at Minyip Recreation Reserve on Thursday, April 30, as part of the federal government’s Play Our Way program.
The initiative, aimed at overcoming barriers to women participating in sport, saw the club receive $2 million to build and upgrade facilities at Minyip.
As well as helping build a new netball court with shelter, fencing and LED lighting, the funding helped deliver new changerooms for netballers, footballers, swimmers and volunteers, as well as accessible toilets.
Burras president Chris Delahunty said the new facilities mean the reserve will be an inclusive and welcoming space for years to come.
“The completion of these new facilities is a major milestone for our club and wider community,” Mr Delahunty said.
“The new changerooms and netball court will provide a more inclusive, modern and welcoming environment for players, families and visitors for many years to come.
“We are grateful for the support provided through the Play Our Way program in helping bring this important project to life.”
Minister for Sport Anika Wells believes the facilities will improve female athletes’ experience and, ideally, invite and retain girls and women to start or continue sport.
“Play Our Way is helping women and girls overcome barriers to start or continue playing sports,” Miss Wells said.
“Safe and inclusive facilities can make a huge difference in a female athlete’s experience.
“The Albanese Government’s $2 million investment means more women and girls in the Minyip and Murtoa communities can experience a lifelong love of sport and all the benefits that come with it.”
Senator for Victoria, Jana Stewart, added that it is a win for the wider community, including women and girls.
"Growing up in Swan Hill, I know how much sport means to regional communities,” Ms Stewart said.
“Women and girls in Minyip and Murtoa deserve facilities that reflect just how much they matter."
