Bruce Meyer is seeking re-election to the West Wimmera Shire
As a candidate seeking re-election to the West Wimmera Shire, I can say it is an honour and privileged to have served this Shire over many years.
As a council together we have achieved a lot in this last term, and if re-elected I will continue to push for the things that local government is expected to do, and always advise against getting distracted by issues that divide the Council and community and are outside our responsibilities.
Our road network is the most valuable asset our Shire has. The farming community pay 95% of the rates and I believe have a right to be expectant that this is the priority spending from one end of the Shire to the other.
We have to keep improving our footpath network in the towns so residents can move about safely.
There still is a long way to go. When I joined council there were a lot of unsealed roads in towns that took a lot of traffic, and created a dust hazard to those who lived on them. Through my influence virtually all streets that have close housing are now sealed.
To be a good Councillor you have to know your community, be part of it and get involved in various groups. Be prepared to take leadership roles and do your fair share of voluntary work. If you don't do this, but push your own ideas and interests you will fail.
This Council needs Councillors who are prepared to stand up when needed on local government issues, such as government funding and a fair share of grant money to small Councils. I am prepared to advocate for the advancement of this Shire and its communities.
I have been a Councillor for 29 years, 9 times Mayor and have been awarded an Order of Australia for services to local government and community.
