Local government exists to support everyone in the municipality. Our current structure has not. This is why I am putting my hand up. They ignore the majority for the minority. They ignore that local government exist to provide services to the whole municipality, not just certain locations. They forget it is our money they are spending, whether it's from rates, or taxes from state and/or federal grants.
Fostering a more open government is defined by integrity, transparency, and strong community engagement. If elected, I will advocate for a council that makes decisions that serve our residents' best interests and strengthen our community.
For over six years I have been trying to keep the council accountable through FOI requests and public commentary on my Facebook blog: Brian Basham's Horsham Halo.
Now is the time to part of the solution. As a former state and federal public servant, I have a strong working knowledge of government and how it can best support us.
Academically, I hold a degree in leadership/management, two master's degrees in education, and a master's in counselling.
I am also completing a doctorate in counselling, focusing on how management decisions affect employee mental health. My experience includes teaching business management at TAFE and law at the Victoria Police Academy.
As a small business owner, I am dedicated to supporting and growing local enterprises. I will work to attract new businesses and push for state and federal support to decentralize operations to our region. The pandemic has shown that remote work is viable and now is the time to expand job opportunities and drive economic development in Horsham.
With my diverse background and commitment to our community, I am well-positioned to help guide Horsham toward a vibrant and prosperous future.
