Bombers netballers defeat Kalkee in round eight
A four-quarter effort saw Noradjuha Quantong defeat Kalkee by seven goals at the Kalkee Recreation Reserve in round eight of the Horsham District Football Netball League. In other matches, Laharum and Rupanyup secured big wins whilst the Cougars had a tough win.
Kalkee brought their defensive game early and after starting slow in recent weeks, the Bombers reacted and found a way through, to take a four-goal lead into quarter time.
The match remained tight throughout the second quarter, extending the margin to five goals at half time.
In the second half, the Bombers started to get on top, to take an eight-goal lead into three-
quarter time. They ran out the game to win, 48-41.
Shannon Couch was sensational up forward again with another 39 goals whilst Brooke Pay continues her good season down back and Holly Nuske is outstanding through the centre.
For the Kees, Emily Polack on wing defence and Clair McDonald as goal-keeper were their best players.
Bombers coach Fiona Rowe said she was pleased they were able to meet their goals.
"As a team, one of our goals was to play a quality four-quarter effort and it was pleasing to see we were able to do that," Rowe said.
Taylor Shelly, who has been great up forward, played down back and Rowe said she took a lot of intercepts and applied the pressure down back.
"We wanted to add a different element to the game and felt like we needed to change up in attack and defence as we have some versatility this year, and it worked. Everyone played really well," Rowe said.
Cougars get over Lakers late in a tough win.
26 goals to Nikki Hawker and 17 to Ruby Gordon, led Kaniva Leeor to a seven-goal victory over Taylors Lake at Kaniva Recreation Reserve.
In a tough first quarter, the Cougars took a two-goal lead into quarter time, and then extended that to five at half time.
The Lakers weren't to be denied, throwing everything they could at the Cougars, to level the scores a three-quarter time.
The Cougars were composed in the last quarter, scoring 12 goals to five to run out 45-38 goal winners.
Sinead Kuchel and Lauren Brown were the best players for the Cougars.
For the Lakers, Lily Weir continued her excellent season with another solid display at wing attack with Zoe Gray excellent down back with Harriet Overman and Tayla Eltz scoring 21 and 17 goals respectively.
Cougars coach Kylie King said changes they made during the game helped get them over the line.
"The Lakers got a good start on us in the first five minutes of the game and our girls were caught napping, and it made us struggle a bit for the rest of the game, so to pull it back in the last quarter was a credit to the girls," King said.
"We changed the team up a few times during the game, trying a few different combinations and the one we had in the last quarter worked, and we were able to get the win."
King said Kuchel and Brown were outstanding.
"Kuchel started at wing defence and moved to attack and made a bit of a difference to our attacking end," King said.
"It opened the attacking end more and helped provide more opportunities for our shooters, who did well.
"Lauren played at centre and wing defence and proved to be very handy and is a versatile player and played well, having mostly play at centre recently. She was pivotal in making the game harder and shutting it down."
Demons have a big win in Caitlin Jones-Story's 150th game
Caitlin Jones-Story celebrated her 150th in style, shooting 37 goals in Laharum's 66-26 goal win over Natimuk.
Natimuk challenged early, staying close to the Demons, trailing by 10 goals at quarter time.
The Demons started to get control in the second quarter, extending the lead to 21 goals at half time.
In the second half, they restricted the Rams to a further 12 goals as they scored 31 to run out 40 goal winners.
Maddison Iredell came back from a week off, having gone up to QLD for a CrossFit championship, shooting 29 goals with Olivia Jones-Story great through the centre.
For the Rams, Emma Uebergang continued her terrific season with another 20 goals with Emily Hateley great through the centre.
Panthers maul Saints
Rupanyup was relentless with a 58-22 win over Edenhope Apsley at Rupanyup Recreation Reserve.
They pounced out of the blocks fast with a 17-4 goal first quarter. The Saints battled hard in the second quarter, but the Panthers were tough, extending the margin to 15 at half time.
In the third quarter, they restricted the Saints to eight goals to take a 21-goal lead into the last break.
The last quarter was the best for the Panthers, scoring 16 goals to one to run out 36-goal winners.
Victoria Taylor and Jedda Heard were standouts in defence with Zanaiya Bergen shooting 40 goals at the other end.
For the Saints, Tahlia Sailor shot 13 goals with Morgan Coventry their best player at wing defence.
