NORADJUHA Quantong bounced back from last week’s loss to Pimpinio in Horsham District Football League to beat Edenhope Apsley by 13 points at Quantong Recreation Reserve.
James Hallett and Zachary Kelly both kicked three goals for the home side alternating between forward and midfield in the 13.5.83 to 10.10.70 victory.
The Bombers conceding the first 5 goals of the game but started to swing the momentum back late in the first to trail by 23 points at Quarter Time. A six-goal to zip second quarter saw the Bombers take a 15 point lead into half time. They kept that lead for the remainder of the match.
Bombers coach Damian Cameron addressed the slow starts which are starting to become a common occurrence.
“Last week we started out slow against Pimpinio and whilst we got back into the game we couldn’t take a victory. This week we started out slow but managed to win but this is something we need to address,” Cameron said.
“It’s a focus and preparation thing. After last week I thought it may have kicked the boys into gear but now this week we will focus on it a bit more and look at how we prepare physically and mentally to overcome it,” Cameron added.
Declan Bushby was solid again on the wing with Tory Chapple and Justin Ellis chipping in around the ground. Thomas East was on debut and didn’t look out of place.
For the Saints Josh Roman kicked 7 goals with Ben McIntyre playing an important role as one of their best players.
At North Park Pimpinio came out of the blocks fast with a seven to two goal first half to take a 30 point lead into half time. After the main break the Swifts started to gain momentum kicking seven goals to one to take a six-point lead at three quarter time. They maintained that momentum to run out 24-point winners, 14.9.93 to 10.9.69.
Pimpinio coach Clinton Burdett spoke about the second half performance.
“We self-exploded. It is one of our weaknesses where we lose concentrating for a quarter and the Swfits gave us the jump.” Burdett said.
“Credit to Stawell. They came out firing in that second half and got on top of us. As a young side and me not being out there at the moment, I think we just need some leadership on the field.”
“When we get leads we need to slow the game down. We couldn’t do that and that is something the group will learn as they continue to grow,” Burdett added.
Matt Healy kicked a game high five goals for the home team with Thomas Cairns and Scott Carey best on ground. For Pimpinio it was youngster Frederick Frew and centre half forward Liam Jakobi leading the way with three goals a-piece.
Burdett spoke highly of a few players, particularly Reece McNally in the Ruck.
“Reece was terrific in the first half. He was dominant. He copped a knock in the third quarter which slowed us down a bit and we struggled a bit. It wasn’t serious so he will be fine to play this week,” Burdett explained.
Burdett was also impressed by Jye Brown who has stepped up from the under 17’s.
“He played a terrific game. He ran all day from the wing and gave us a few good entries into the forward 50.”
“On the other wing Jack Baird played his first game back from injury. He gave us great drive through the midfield,” Burdett added.
Burdett also pointed out Centre Half Back Darcy Conlan.
“He had a tough task and I thought he played well. He attacked the footy and gave us drive from the backline,” Burdett concluded.
At Dock Lake Recreation Reserve it was Natimuk that were triumphant getting their first win of the season by 52 points over Taylors Lake.
The Lakers were in it in the first half trailing by 18 points at half time but again died away in the second half to lose 8.7.55 to 13.25.103.
For the Rams it was Alex Baker leading the way with five goals with Mitch Riddell best on ground. For the Lakers Gavin Kelm returned to the club to kick three goals.
Lakers Coach Kyle Pinto spoke about the loss.
“They had a bigger bodies and they got on top of the contest. They smashed us around the ball and controlled things from the contest,” Pinto said.
Billy Finnigan was the best player for the Lakers generating plenty of drive from the backline and Troy Brimble again played his role as a big inside midfielder whilst Trae Martin was solid on the wing. Angus Atchison played his best game for the club as an Assistant Coach.
The Lakers borrowed Andrew Taylor from the Horsham Saints and Matthew White from the Edwardstown Football Club in South Australia - and both were standouts on the day. Lakers coach Kyle Pinto was pleased with how they came in and played their role.
“Andrew Taylor is a great Ruckman and we have been crying out for a Ruck. He was phenomenal” Pinto explained.
“Matthew White was really good through the midfield. He managed to kick a goal when resting up forward and we are hopeful to keep him for the next couple of games,” Pinto concluded.
Laharum only managed one goal against premiership favourites Harrow Balmoral at Cameron Oval. Simon Close continues to kick goals, this time kicking 11 in the 33.21.219 to 1.2.8 win. Mitchell Grant and James Staude also chipped in with four goals with Nick Pekin and Jai Thompson again amongst the best players on the ground.
For the Demons they didn’t have the ideal lead up removing Glenn Doyle from his Senior Coaching Position during the week. John Doyle managed their solitary goal whilst Brett Ervin, Jarrod Kemp, Oliver Skykes and Heath MacInnes again were standouts again for them.
Jeparit Rainbow continue to win matches by big margins – this time a 75 point win over Kaniva Leeor at the Kaniva Recreation Reserve. Peter Weir kicked five goals with Nicholas Yarran chipping in with four in the 20.18.138 to 9.9.63 win. Ashley Clugston and Thomas Clarke were also great for the Storm. Beau Nunan kicked four for the home team and was one of the better players on the ground.
In the final match at Rupanyup Recreation Reserve it was Rupanyup winning the Grand Final Rematch by 30 points. The Panthers were dominate throughout the match in the 9.13.67 to 5.7.37 win.
Jacob Christie and Lachlan Weidemann both kicked two goals for the home team with Bill Hansen and Josh Bolitho solid throughout the day. For the Kees Simon Hobbs, Matt Nield and Jacob Harris were their best players.
