Bombers bring down Lakers
Noradjuha Quantong’s senior football side have reminded the competition why they are the ladder leaders, delivering a big victory over Taylors Lake on Saturday May 23. Playing at Quantong, the Bombers kicked 29.14 (188) to the Lakers’ 7.7 (49).
Although not able to capitalise on their first couple of opportunities, the Bombers quickly took control of the game, kicking four goals in a 10-minute span midway through the opening term.
With the exception of an Alex Baker goal, the home side dominated play to lead 41-7 at the first break.
Three early goals in the second quarter, including two to Judah Hobbs, extended the Bombers’ lead to 54, before two quick Lakers goals appeared to spark their revival.
But the home side put that to rest, snapping four goals in five minutes before eventually taking a 98-26 lead into half-time.
Barring a Riley Hall goal early in the quarter, the Bombers dominated the third quarter to extend the margin to 102 (135-33) at the final break.
Led by three final-term goals by assistant coach Wade Francis, the Bombers piled on an additional eight goals in the fourth quarter to finish 139-point victors.
Among the leading goalkickers for the Bombers, Judah Hobbs led the side with eight, Wade Francis and Dylan Shelley each kicked five, and Declan Phyland contributed four, while Thomas Phyland and Dyson Parish joined the others as the team’s best.
Alex Baker led the Lakers with two goals, while Logan Millar, Billy Finnigan, Patrick Lindsey, Koby Westerland and Jye Brown were among the team’s best.
Bombers assistant coach Wade Francis said he was very pleased with the team’s effort across the game.
“I think that's probably one of our more complete performances as a team for four quarters, which is what I was most impressed about,” Francis said.
Asked about the performances of Declan Phyland and Judah Hobbs, the Bombers assistant praised the duo.
“We're very lucky to have Declan,” Francis said.
“His knowledge and ability to play footy is very valuable to our team and he creates a lot of opportunities for us, but then he also hits the scoreboard himself too.
“He's been in some pretty good form so far this year.
“Judah finished with eight and if he'd made the most of his opportunities probably could have had a few more.
“It’s tough to match up on Judah, he’s so athletic and quick.”
Francis also commended the team’s depth, which has been tested in recent weeks.
“Taylors were missing a few key players and were a bit undermanned, but we’re still missing a fair few players as well,” he said.
“The people we've been able to bring up into the senior team have been able to play a role for us and hold their own.
“So that's an impressive thing for us to show that we have that depth if we do need it going forward.”
