Big weekend in Dimmy
Around town this weekend, there is no shortage of things to browse, try on, buy, taste, experience and watch, so make sure you take advantage of all the activity.
Across both days is the Town Garage Sale, and organiser Jeni Lorenz said the 8th and 9th of November were chosen to be part of the National Garage Sale Trail.
For those seeking a bargain, it is essential to note that some vendors will only be operating on Saturday, which will be clearly indicated on a location list made available in the morning.
“It's up to the houses involved, and I'll be putting that on the list whether they're opening Saturday (and) Sunday,” she said.
“Sunday might be a question mark for some people, depending on what they've got left, but most people have put down Sunday as well.
“The maps are going to be available in town from eight o'clock (Saturday). We've said the starting time is nine o'clock for the garage sale.
"But you know that's a rule that's never kept if people come into town and the stuff is out and the balloons are out and people are ready to go, then they're ready to go!
“It should be a ripper weekend.”
Tower Park
Coordinating both days to ensure the landmark corner of Lloyd and Lochiel Streets will be a hive of activity from 9am has been La Vergne Lehmann.
Saturday will host the Tower Park Market, featuring a variety of stalls selling specific goods.
Sunday has been slated to be a Trash n Treasure trove, effectively becoming part of the aforementioned Town Garage Sale.
La Vergne said people turning up on Saturday will find a wide range of quality items “from around the region ... whether it's candles or plants or clothing, fruit and veg, sweet treats like biscuits or chocolates and things like that”.
“There's a whole lot of different things that people bring to our market to sell,” she said.
“What we're trying this time is something a bit different.
"We've worked with the Star Theatre owner, and we're opening that up for those people who want to be able to sell their products indoors.
“So that gives us a bit more scope for if the weather's bad, we can move people inside.
"But also, there are some things that people don't want to necessarily have outside, so we've got some people who have got clothing and things like that; they prefer to have an indoor venue, it suits them a bit better.”
As for the Sunday Trash n Treasure, La Vergne said it would accommodate “people who don't want to have a garage sale at home, or can't because they live out of town”.
“We'll just open up the Tower Park area for those trash and treasure stalls on the Sunday,” she said.
She was also happy to have people jump in late to fill one of the few remaining stall spaces on either day.
“If anyone wants to have a stall at either one of them, we've still got a bit of space left,” La Vergne said.
“They're welcome to contact me.”
One thing that will be common on both days is the Dimboola Lions Club keeping the BBQ hot.
“There'll be a Sausage Sizzle, and people can get a $3 snag … so there’s something for people to munch on while they’re browsing,” La Vergne said.
Regatta down by the river
If sitting by the calm waters of the Wimmera River watching some quality rowing is more your style, there’s plenty of opportunity over both days with the Dimboola Regatta.
On Saturday, starting at about 8.30am, with a sprint distance of 750 metres, the quad male and female sculls should be a series of high-intensity races with plenty of opportunity to cheer competitors on.
Regatta host, Mick Salter, said there would be 15 clubs from around Victoria competing and advised on what would likely be the best vantage point.
“The last 250 metres of the course, there's a grass-banked area under pine trees,” he said.
“We're inviting people if they've got little marquees to put those underneath the pine trees.
“We've got a catering centre there. We've got breakfast (and) lunch being served, and obviously drinks and other confectionery sort of things will be available for sale as well.
“The regatta will probably finish on Saturday at about 4.30 or five o'clock, and then we'll go into the presentation of trophies.”
Then on Sunday from about 10.30am, there’s a 6.2km time trial event, with at least 16 crews racing individually against the clock rather than directly against other boats.
Mick said the longer course made for multiple spots to see the action.
“There’s access to the river at the start, but it's only limited,” he said.
“You can see the crews go past at Picnic Bend, and then probably one of the spots where a lot of them sit is at Sandy Bend, which is a very wide section of the river, a tight corner.
“The next section that people can get down to would be along what we call the home course, which is the course we use for Saturday.
“We hope that we have people come along and just sit on the riverbank and enjoy the atmosphere – and the rowing, of course!”
Saturday Twilight Market
With the completion of Saturday’s rowing and starting at 5pm, the Riverfront Twilight Market will be a great way to end the day.
With stalls offering from handmade goods to fresh local produce, there'll be loads of opportunities to find something appealing.
The Beer Garden at the Rowing Club will also be open, serving a wide range of ice-cold drinks and featuring live music from several artists to help you unwind.
You won’t go hungry – street food from around the world will also be on offer, so no matter what you feel like on the day, there’s sure to be something to suit your tastes.
Running until the sunset light fades away, enjoy the carnival atmosphere at the Recreation Reserve until 9pm.
Basketball
Finally, also at the Recreation Reserve, cheer on some of the brightest upcoming under-12 boys, under-16 boys and under-16 girls in Western Victoria, as part of the Horsham Intersport Junior Classic Basketball Tournament – other games are being played in Horsham and Warracknabeal.
Games will run from 8am until 5pm on Saturday, November 8 and then also from 8am to 1pm on Sunday.
The boys under-12s and under-16s Raptors teams will be playing in some of the games in Dimboola.
