Family and friends sang Dunmunkle Lodge resident Betty Saunders a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday in celebration of her 102nd birthday last Wednesday.

Born in Natimuk, Mrs Saunders later moved to Polkemmet where she and late husband Malcolm ran a farm.

She spent many happy years raising their three children - Lyal, Evan and Julie - as well as running the household and helping on the farm.

A renowned show cake judge, Mrs Saunders was an avid cook herself, creating beautiful sponges and fruit cakes. She was a member of the former Polkemmet Tennis Club, the local Guild and attended the Uniting Church.

She moved to Dunmunkle Lodge only six years ago.

"Mum is still remarkable for her age," he said. "She remains relatively healthy, trying to go for a walk every day.

"She enjoys spending time with her friends, playing cards and other games at the Lodge."

Mrs Sanders' surviving sister Marg Northfield, 97, of Noradjhua also attended the afternoon tea celebration.

"Mum enjoyed the day but couldn't believe it," Lyal said. "She turned to me at one point and asked 'am I 102 today?'!"
