Change is often hard to understand and accept. It challenges us to ignore or adapt and it might take some time to get used to the new concept or the new idea.
But think about the change that has happened over the past century or even the last decade and there has been a multitude of inventions and innovations across medical, manufacturing, defence, power generation and industrial fields.
There are people who spend their time and energy inventing various things that will enhance our progress and there are lots of people who are employed to spend their time putting things together.
While this goes on we can wonder where all these ideas come from and feel overwhelmed.
Changes to the fire brigades operational planning can be changed by recommendations of a coroner.
The police have developed creative arrest charges so fewer law breakers will evade their indiscretions.
All of us will be impacted by changes, and the question arises how will we cope with them.
Motor cars are no longer called cars but electric devices. VicRoads is even trialling crushed glass as a road surface.
Satellites guide our boats, tractors, walks and communications, and robots drive some of the trucks digging up the minerals. Tractors have replaced the team of horses and the driver is figured into the planning rather than be an afterthought.
The early machines made it hard for the operator. Now the tractor driver sits in a comfortable cabin while the engine operates in the guiding hands of modern technology.
It might be considered there have been enough inventions and new ideas already, but there are still many challenges we face, and research and innovation will be required for many decades.
How we cope with new thinking is the question for us to ponder.
How do we chase a fire as it goes under a new power line? How do we cope with electricity to move us around in lighter, plastic vehicles, or having the news instantly beamed in from elsewhere in the world?
