Barley crop fire contained near Brim
Country Fire Authority (CFA) crews responded to a crop and stubble fire at Peter Quick’s farm on Brim East School Road, approximately 10 kilometres east of Brim, on Tuesday afternoon.
The fire which broke out around 4.39 pm, quickly spread through a barley crop, prompting an immediate response from CFA teams.
Farm owner Peter Quick confirmed that the blaze originated in a Case IH harvester.
“I heard a bang from within the header and suddenly it was engulfed in flames,” he said.
“All I could do was grab my phone and jump out of the header as soon as possible, and called 000.”
The Herald understands that fire bombers were called but were unavailable due to dealing with other fires in the region.
10 tankers were called, but in the end, up to 15 appliances attended the scene, while private units also supported the brigade's efforts.
According to a CFA spokesperson, the incident was declared under control at 5.20pm and fully safe at 6.14pm. Crews remained on scene for some time controlling the fire.
The header was well alight when brigades arrived, and has been deemed a write-off.
Victoria Police were also present on the scene to assist the CFA.
