Aquatic Centre aims to ease social struggles
Horsham Aquatic Centre has introduced two free community-focused initiatives as they try to relieve some pressure from those doing it tough.
The centre has opened their showers up during certain times as well as providing free, discrete access to period products through a new dispenser in the ladies changerooms.
On weekdays from 11am to 12pm and 4pm to 5pm and weekends from 2pm to 3pm, their showers will be available to anybody who needs a clean, safe place to have a shower free of charge.
Soap is available with users being able to keep what they use.
Centre manager of Horsham Aquatic Centre for YMCA Victoria Mark Meyer said he got the idea from his boss, who also manages SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre in South Australia.
"Once a month they open the centre up like a homelessness shelter," Mr Meyer said.
"I thought it would be beneficial in Horsham and to have regular times instead of once a month."
Statistics show that six out of 10 women are struggling to afford sanitary products and free access to these essential items will provide a massive relief for those that need help.
"We've been working with Taboo to make sure everyone can have equal access to period products," My Meyer said.
"We want the centre to be accessible to the community and it's fantastic to be able to provide these services.
"It's a community facility and we want people to feel comfortable here."
Mr Meyer said it was a team effort to bring these initiatives to life.
