Agency "excited" for more social housing
It has now been over a month since community housing provider, Haven Home Safe opened their new modular social housing units in Horsham, with agencies now working with clients to apply for these units.
Uniting-western division homelessness team leader Belinda Gilpin said her team is "super excited" about the new housing opportunity.
"Our team has been busy making sure applications for the Victorian Housing Register (VHR) are eligible for consideration," she said.
"It's great that 47 people will benefit from the units.
"To some it means the end of couch surfing and sleeping rough and not having to worry about violence as much."
Ms Gilpin said the project will create a flow-on effect, with those in transitional housing waiting to move into long term affordable housing.
"It will then open up transitional housing for those waiting for it," she said.
"They can look toward achieving new goals. Housing is paramount to that."
The unit complex located in North Horsham comprises of three one bedroom and 22 two bedroom homes, that are all equipped with individual rainwater tanks, all electric appliances, heat pump hot water services and natural lighting.
"The ability for modular homes to provide diversified housing options is a big plus, when considering the majority of social and affordable housing renters are looking for smaller one to two bedroom homes," Haven Home safe CEO Trudi Ray said.
"Smaller homes also mean reduced energy expenditure for renters, which is another benefit, especially given the cost-of-living pressures."
"Modular housing is great," Ms Gilpin said. "They have so many efficiencies to help with cost-of-living."
Ms Gilpin ensured Uniting will maintain contact and support with those who secure successful tenancies.
