A test of strength and stamina
The Warracknabeal Sheaf Toss Championship is set to return to the Warracknabeal Show for another year with all ages encouraged to enter and have a go.
Sheaf tossing is a traditional Scottish agricultural sport that puts competitors' skill and strength to the test as they use a pitchfork to hurl a straw-filled bag, weighing 3.6 kilograms, over a bar suspended overhead.
Each competitor has three chances to clear the bar height before it is raised for those who were successful.
Steward Ian Bibby said the event would have interstate representation as South Australians Daniel Schache and his son Cooper made the trip to Warracknabeal.
"They are highly competitive," Mr Bibby said.
Australian Sheaf Tossing Association (ASTA) member and Victorian Sheaf Tossing champion Andrew Peterkin from Warrenheip will also attend.
Mr Bibby has been a member of ASTA since 1988.
"My tossing days are over but I've been put in charge to organise the Warracknabeal competition," he said.
Sheaf tossing categories include Novice Handicap, Open Handicap, Sheaf Toss Championship and Championship for Women.
"The ladies' category will have a lighter sheaf weight," Mr Bibby said.
"But if they enter the novice category they will have the 3.6-kilo weight.
"There will be prizemoney and ribbons on offer."
Entries can also be made on the day before the event commences at 1pm sharp.
All event categories will comply with the rules set by ASTA.
