'A team effort' Horsham little athletes star at region relays in Ballarat
About 40 athletes attended the carnival in Ballarat on November 17.
Horsham's little athletes displayed their teamwork at the region relay carnival in Ballarat on Sunday, November 17.
The club was represented by about 40 competitors who returned with nine wins, with 10 second and seven third placings.
Club vice-president Ben Sawyer was thrilled to see the teamwork on display.
"The really good part about it is athletics is such an individual sport, whereas they go and do relays, and they've got teammates all day, and it's absolutely brilliant that they get to do that with a team," Sawyer said.
"They work make sure they've got their baton changes tight, it's all team effort. Whereas everything else you're on your own."
Events included 4x100 and 4x200 metre relays, as well as medley and mixed relays.
The medley relay sees a team member complete one of the 100, 200, 300 and 400-metre distances.
"The boys under 13 team were probably the best of the day," Sawyer said.
"They won all three of their races, and then one of the mixed relays."
A state relay championships will be held in Epping, north of Melbourne on Saturday, December 14.
The centre is also hosting its open day on Sunday, November 24, with the winners of the 100-metre events during the day will qualify for the Kannamaroo Gift to finish the day.
Rising stars to take on country's best
Two of Horsham's rising stars will represent the region in upcoming events.
Jack Sawyer has been selected in the School Sports Victoria track and field team to compete at the 12 and under national championships in Sydney from Thursday, November 28.
While Georgia Foster will travel to New Zealand in January 2025, to compete in the Colgate Games.
