A new scene in town
Fresh from presenting at the 2025 Drama Australia National Conference in Adelaide last month, Emily Dalkin, director and founder of "Drama Up!", has launched a series of workshops for young people at the Horsham Town Hall and Regional Gallery.
Since beginning in March this year, Wednesday afternoons at the Town Hall have welcomed a plethora of nine to 12-year-olds to ignite their imaginations through drama.
Emily, an experienced educator based in the Wimmera, said the opportunity to connect regional communities to the arts is paramount for developing self-expression, as well as critical and creative thinking.
“This year’s national conference was themed 'Reinvigorate', exploring ways drama can bring learning to life and support wellbeing," she said.
"Post covid has presented us with many new challenges in schools and our communities.
"Drama is a safe environment for students to build their confidence, practice working with others, and develop skills that will support them later in life, including social skills, leadership skills, and more.”
The workshops are open to nine to 12-year-olds; no previous experience is required.
“Our workshops encourage play and exploration through characters and script work," Emily said.
"Students seamlessly build empathy, listening, and team skills through ensemble work.
"It’s amazing to see confidence build in just a few weeks.
"We have a big emphasis on finding the joy in learning, sharing a laugh, and having fun.”
The workshops will be held every Wednesday until July 2 from 4 pm to 5:15 pm.
