After many months closed for renovations, Warracknabeal community members and visitors can celebrate the reopening of the Tourist Information Centre.
Aside from a new desk, storage areas, and local souvenirs, there are a number of new major features at the Centre, including a large wall print featuring a picture of Nick Cave with biographical details.
Another feature, on the back wall, is the three stained glass windows which were recently removed from the library and are now a striking record of the area’s history.
These windows were the result of a Community Arts Project for the 1988 bi–centennial, and were intended to be incorporated into the newly amalgamated Yarriambiack Shire.
They were placed in the Warracknabeal Library as a temporary measure, and when the community was invited to submit any ideas for the new Tourist Information Centre, the former Arts Council requested the windows be shifted to the more prominent location.
A third feature of the new Centre is a large map of the Yarriambiack Shire showing the Silo Art Trail.
Volunteers reported that during the reorganisation of the Centre, unfortunately the Nick Cave visitors book - which recorded the names and comments of visitors and fans in recent years - has gone missing.
Anyone with any information on its whereabouts, please contact the Centre.
Future plans include a series of information boards covering the history of farming in the area, and a new information board outlining the area’s attractions is in the final stages of design and will be placed alongside the Warracknabeal Information Board.
A new flag with the iconic Information Centre logo will also be placed outside the Centre, to entice visitors and locals alike to call in and see the changes.
