LET’S go back to the first tee and advise results for the numerous golfers that have played out at our local golf course.
December 22, the Royal Mail Hotel Meal Run was played by 17 players with the winner on the front nine hole being Jake Cheney with 22 points, defeating Noel Kearns on 19 points.
Back nine hole winner was Gary Krahe with 18 points and Noel Kearns again (who is having a great consistent run of results) also with 18 points.
Nearest the pin on the fifth hole was Jake Cheney, seventh was Mick Cheney, and 13th hole was Gary Krahe.
The best result for the 18 holes was Noel Kearns on 37 Stableford points, followed by Gary Krahe on 35 points.
Results for the Christmas Eve competition saw 23 men compete in the Stableford event sponsored by Roy and Shirley Liersch (great contributors to the club in numerous ways).
The winner in A Division was Ryan Smith (12 handicap) with 34 points, defeating Russell Blandthorn (11) also with 34 points. The man who took home the Christmas goodies was Max Woodward (25) with an amazing 39 Stableford points,
winning on a countback from David Trippett (19) also on 39 points.
Good scores leading into Christmas were John Barbetti and Keith Pearce both on 35, and Wayne Dovaston and Dennis Murphy both on 34 points.
Ladies Stableford was played by four members with Corrine Heintze winning with 38 points off a 19 handicap. Runner-up was Karen Germano (21) with 33 points.
Nearest the pin on the fifth hole was Ryan Smith, seventh hole was Brian Pitt and Karen Germano, and the 13th hole was Nathan McLean.
Royal Mail Meal Run on December 29 was played by 20 players. Winner on the front nine holes was David Kranz (16) with a great score of 23 points, followed by Gary Krahe (10) on 20 points.
The back nine holes was won by Brenton Cheney (14) with 22 points, followed by Ryan Smith (12), Daniel Kearns (17) and David Kranz (14), all on 20 points.
Nearest the pin on the fifth hole was Gary Krahe, seventh hole was John Barbetti, and the 13th was Brenton Cheney.
Best score for the 18 holes was David Kranz on 43 points who certainly must have enjoyed the Christmas lunch with that score. Well done David.
The last golf day of 2022 on December 31 was a Versus Par event sponsored by Russell Blandthorn and Brian Pitt.
Winner in A Grade was Richard Bett (16) with a +1 score, defeating David Kranz (14) also with +1.
B Grade was won by Terry Sanders (17) with a score of +3, with John Barbetti (21) being runner-up with -1.
Other good scores amongst the 20 players were Daniel Kearns, Mick Cheney and Dean Gunn, all on -1 scores.
Ladies winner for the Stableford was Mary Massey (25) with an amazing 40 points, followed by Karen Germano (21) with 36 points.
Nearest the pin on the fifth hole was Dean Gunn and Cindy Marsh, seventh was Terry Sanders and Leonie Atkin, and the 13th hole was David Kranz and Leonie Atkin.
Jono and Johno Stableford event on January 2 was only played by six players (due to the warm day) with Brenton Cheney winning the event with 34 points followed by Stan Ryan with 33 points.
Next event for the new year was the Royal Mail Mean Run on January 5 with a good field of 22 players.
On the front nine holes Max Woodward, with 21 points was the winner followed by Noel Kearns with 21 points. Next was Dennis Murphy on 19 points.
The back nine holes was won by Noel Huebner with 20 points on a countback from Brian Scott also with 20 points, Noel Kearns on 19, along with Brenton Cheney.
Noel Kearns won the 18 hole with a great score of 40 points (cut it out Noel, this is getting embarrassing for the golfers under 18 years of age).
The Naylor Agencies monthly medal was on the first Saturday of 2023 with a good field expected after the Christmas/New Year period. 24 men competed and 12 women played - a good field for the day’s event.
Dean Gunn (7) continued his good form with 71 nett, followed by Darrell McKay (23) on nett 72.
Other good scores were from Gary Krahe and Brenton Cheney on 73 nett, and Derek Picken and Russell Blandthorn, who both ended up with nett 75. Dean, therefore, was the winner of the monthly medal shooting a great round of 71 off the stick.
In the ladies event Julie Bayles had 38 Stableford points beating Cindy Marsh on 36 points.
Nearest the pin on the fifth hole was David Kranz and Casey Phelan, seventh was Russell Blandthorn and Kaye Picken, and the 13th was Wayne Dovaston. Nearest second shot on the ninth was Dean Gunn.
Speaking of Dean Gunn. Dean and a few mates headed to Chalambar at Ararat recently which is a very good golf course on the mountain side. Dean shot a 69 gross score with 44 Stableford points.
Remember that Dean plays off a seven handicap, therefore that is a great score. Well done Dean, enjoyable day.
Thursday January 12 had a field of 15 players competing for the Royal Mail Hotel Meal Run.
The front nine best scorer was John Peters with 20 Stableford points, followed by Dean Gunn on 19 points.
The back nine was won by Derek Picken with a score of 19 points, with runner-up, Dennis Murphy along with Richie Bett, both on 18 points.
The best overall score for the 18 holes was Derek Picken with 37 Stableford points, followed by Dennis Murphy on 35 points.
And finally, we got to last Saturday’s Stableford round of 18 holes where all players who wished to compete had to hit off by 9am due to the heat-rule.
Fifteen players competed in the men’s event and two ladies played in their separate Stableford event.
This was sponsored by Dean Gunn, Ryan McKenzie and Ryan Smith. Thank you to these three golfers and club members.
Scores were good amongst those that played in warm to hot conditions, and also were finished by 11.30am.
Nathan McLean (13) won A Grade with 37 points, followed by Gary Krahe (10) with 36 Stableford points. Gary was runner-up on a countback from Russell Blandthorn, also with 36 points.
B Grade winner was Jamie Watson (27) with 35 points, with runner-up John Barbetti (20) beating Alan McLean (20) on a countback, both with 34 points. Other good scores registered was Brenton Cheney, 35 points.
Ladies winner was Karen Germano (2) with 36 Stableford points, followed by Leonie Saunders (30) with 25 points.
For those non-golfers reading this article, 36 points is playing to your handicap on all golf courses. More or less than that over a series of rounds played alters your handicap per round.
Nearest the pin on the ninth hole second shot was Daniel Kearns. Nearest on the fifth was Jake Jess (birdie) and Karen Germano, seventh was Gary Krahe, and the 13th was John John (bonus).
This week’s event for men is a 4BBB Stableford Aggregate. Grab your partner and come along for hopefully a good day.

I just heard something interesting this morning: one of our local members, Ryan McKenzie, had a hole in one at the “Sands” Golf Club at Torquay, which is an excellent golf course.
Congratulations Rooey, they don’t come very often so enjoy your memories of the fifth hole, although, I also hear you didn’t know it had gone in the hole.
Maybe next time you will get a chance to witness it.
