It is that time of year again as the RSL across Australia conducts its major fundraising appeal for the year.
This year we have a couple of new badges and one in particular should be of interest to Dimboola residents.
The badge depicts Sister Vivian Bullwinkle who was one of the nurses who survived the sinking of the SS Vyner Brooke during WWII. This is the ship Matron Paschke was on when it was sunk by the Japanese.
The badge is a fitting tribute to women who served, particularly nurses.
The other new badge is in remembrance of the Korean War.
The Dimboola Sub-Branch of the RSL will be selling badges outside the IGA, and the Bendigo Bank has also agreed to once again have badges on sale.
The money raised is used to support RSL efforts across Victoria on behalf of veterans.
Veterans in Australia are very well supported by the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) but there are always those, that for some reason, slip through the cracks or who have difficulty in dealing with DVA.
RSL Victoria is very proactive in helping these veterans to get back on their feet or simply get the support they need.
As always we realise that there are many different priorities competing for any spare cash you may have.
All we ask is that you consider spending a little on a badge or pen in order to assist veterans who have served their country.
Badges start at $2 and go up to $50, so there is something for all budgets.
We also know that not everyone can give so please do not feel obligated.
We continue to be humbled by the support of people in the Wimmera and thank you all for your ongoing support.
ANZAC Day services this year will again be held at the Dimboola Memorial Secondary College with the usual two services - the 6am Dawn Service with breakfast to follow, and the mid-morning service stepping off at 8.30am from the gates of the college, a presentation afterwards in the college auditorium, and morning tea in the RSL Hall at the conclusion of this service.
